Advent & Family Worship

by Laurel West

In just a couple of weeks, our family will observe the Advent season.  Celebrating Advent has become a dear and rich tradition for us over the past several years.  Traditionally, Advent is observed during the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, but many resources make this heart-preparing observation a daily activity.

Christmas is so often a full season—one that can easily leave us distracted, disengaged, or disenchanted.  Pausing to still our hearts and refocus on Jesus has been vital for us as adults and has also presented unique ways to disciple our children.

Our daily Advent rhythm is nothing fancy—and certainly not idealistic. (Let's be honest, it's unusual to get through a single night's reading without someone either fussing or jumping off the sofa!). Still, it remains an important family custom for us year to year because remembering God's gracious gift of Jesus is worth celebrating and intentionally sharing with our families... One that I'd encourage your own family to consider adopting.

To get you started, we've compiled a list of recommended resources to point you in the right direction.  Some are great for families with toddlers and some are geared to families with older children.

  • Journey to the Manger - This was one of the first we did. It was a good fit for toddlers and a good introduction to the "Christmas Story".  It includes a poster to hang with various "key players" in the Christmas story to add to the scene as the month goes on.

  • The Family Tree of Christ - This one traces the promise of Jesus through the Old Testament.  The cards also piece together in a puzzle which is a fun touch.

  • Advent Scripture Ornaments - This was a short and sweet daily advent.  Each card had a passage of scripture preparing our hearts.  We enjoyed reading this and then hanging on a special small Christmas tree that we set up just for this purpose.  It was so much fun to see it fill throughout December.

  • Advent Conversation Cards - Beautiful, simple cards with daily Scripture readings and discussion questions.

  • Crew and Co. Advent Cards - Each card corresponds to a section in The Jesus Storybook Bible and the card displays a key scripture passage.

  • Prepare Him Room - Devotional book by the same person who wrote the curriculum we use in Grace Kids.

  • A Jesus Christmas - This is what Grace Church used last year.
